When enrolling at Peirce, families complete a Home Language Survey. If parents answer "Yes" to the question "Is a language other than English spoken at home?" a language screener is administered to determine if the student requires English Language support and may be placed in either an ESL or Bilingual Classroom.
Transitional Bilingual Instruction
Not all English Language Learners (ELLs) are in self-contained bilingual classrooms. Many ELLs are placed in regular classes with English as a Second Language (ESL)-endorsed teachers.
Parents have the right to refuse bilingual services. There is a form sent out every year with a letter explaining the program and their options. The goal of the bilingual program is to help students acquire English as soon as possible through English ESL lessons and Sheltered Instruction. Native language instruction facilitates student learning of concepts in the different content areas in order to develop strong foundational skills before transference to the English language.
