Student-Led conferences - Wednesday, April 10

3/27/2019

Wednesday, April 10, 2019 is “Conference Day” for all Chicago Public Elementary Schools.  There is no school for students on this day, however, we encourage parents to bring their child(ren) to the Conferences.

Report cards will be distributed in two conference sessions.  The first session will last from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the second session is from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.   *Please do not come to school from 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.  Teachers will not be available during that time.  The information and sign-up sheet will be coming home with your child soon, or it can be found by clicking here.

Parents who are unable to attend either of these two sessions on this day are asked to schedule a separate conference with their child’s teacher.

All students will participate in student-led conferences.  As we refine our approach to student-led conferences, we are asking teachers to prepare students to share specific areas of strength and opportunities for growth.  In addition, on conference form, parents have the opportunity to share something that they would like their child or teacher to be prepared to address with you during the conference.

In order for this day to run smoothly, you will have the following responsibilities:
  1. Strongly encouraged - bring your child with you on Student Led Conference Day.  We understand that this is sometimes difficult for families and understand if your child is unable to attend with you.
  2. Give yourself and your child 15-20 minutes for the conference.
  3. Be prepared to visit specials classrooms/common areas of the building.

While conferences are student led, teachers are also available to meet with parents to discuss individual questions that they may have and to discuss student performance data as needed.  If a longer, more private conference is required, please schedule that time with the teacher.

peirce parent of color focus group

3/25/2019

Why should I attend?
  • The stories, feedback, ideas, and suggestions from these groups will be anonymously compiled and used to create a set of recommendations for the school.
  • These focus groups are a critical part of our Peirce Principal Racial Equity Impact Assessment (REIA), which is a collaborative project of the Race & Culture Parent Resource Group and Chicago United for Equity.  Principal Zaimi has volunteered to be the first principal to undergo this process because of her strong commitment to racial equity.
  • After completing the REIA, we will continue to hold the school accountable and collaborate in following through on these recommendations, implementing improvements, and evaluating progress in order to create optimal experiences and opportunities for students of color.

Focus Group Options (Please attend one):
Mornings in the Field House:  Coffee, bagels, and childcare provided
  • Tuesday, April 2,  8:15-9:45am Padres que Hablan Español  (no translation)
  • Wednesday April 3 at 8:15-9:45am Black or African American Parents (no translation)
  • Thursday April 4 at 8:15-9:45am Any Parent of Color (Spanish translation available)

Evenings in the Peace Room (2nd floor):  Pizza & childcare provided
  • Wednesday April 3 from 5:30-7:00pm  Any Parent of Color (Spanish translation available)
  • Thursday April 4 from 5:30-7:00pm Any Parent of Any Child of Color  (Spanish translation available)

What do you mean by “Parent of Color”? Any parent or caregiver (including grandparents or other adult family members) who self-identifies as a person of color.  This includes people who identify as Black or of African descent, Asian, Latino/a or Hispanic, and Native American.
What about white parents of children of color? White parents of children of color will be included in the focus group session on Thursday, April 4 from 5:30-7:00pm, along with any other parents of children of color.
Why only parents of children of color?  This is a Racial Equity Impact Assessment and is designed to look at the opportunity gap being experienced by students of color.  Parents of all races are welcome and invited to attend our Parent Race & Culture Resource Group meetings on April 25 and May 30.
Do I need to RSVP?  No.  However, RSVPs are helpful for letting us know how much food we will need.  RSVP here.
How can I get more involved?  A team of parent volunteers is helping to make this possible. Please contact Megan Brand at antibiaseducator@gmail.com or 773-633-8411 to get involved.

3/6/2019

Career Day at Peirce is rapidly approaching and we need YOU in order for this to be an awesome educational experience for our students. Whether you are a nurse, mechanic, personal trainer, engineer, dancer, teacher, attorney, custodian or business owner... Whatever you do, we need you!

We are looking for a WIDE variety of men and women, willing to spend a memorable morning, speaking with our Middle School students about their careers. Many of our students are largely unaware of the boundless career opportunities available to them! This is a fantastic way to provide them with first hand knowledge of various career paths and great way for you to make an impact on our students’ future.

To give you some idea of what this event looks like, on CAREER DAY, students in our Middle Years Programme (grades 6-8) attend 4 separate one-hour presentations given by our guest speakers. These presentations take place in the middle school classrooms, and are given to groups of no more than 30 students at a time. This is the format we follow for the 1 hour presentations:

  • Welcome-Student Introduction
  • Career Information- Guest speaker(s) discusses the training he or she received to prepare for the career that they chose, and shares career goals.
  • Interaction-Guest speaker(s) lead students in an activity to give them an idea of what a "typical day" is like in this particular line of work.
  • Question and answer- Students present questions that they have prepared and take notes on answers.

When possible, we group our guest speakers by career field to broaden students' understanding and provide a more enriching experience. Here are some additional guidelines to help you plan your presentation.

Register here to volunteer your time and expertise!

School Branding Parent Focus Group - Friday, March 29th, 8:15am

3/6/2019

Peirce School is going through a process to help strengthen our school logo and branding. This is made possible through support from Friends of Peirce and parent Michael McGuire/owner of 88 Brand Partners, a branding and advertising agency in Chicago.

An important step in this process is for members of Michael's team to speak directly with key stakeholders of the school. Michael will be holding three different focus groups (Student Council, Teachers and Parents). During the focus groups, stakeholders will be asked about their impressions of the brand and communications (from visual identity messaging).

Please join us for the Parent Focus Group on Friday, March 29th from 8:15 - 9:45am at Peirce School, exact room to be decided.

Please RSVP on here.

Senn high school tour for peirce parents - Thursday, April 4

3/6/2019

Picture
The Senn tour for Peirce Parents has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 4, 9am - 11:15am (originally March 7). The event is being moved for two reasons: Senn Principal Mary Beck would like to greet Peirce families and answer questions during their visit, but will be at Loyola University with their 11th grade cohort on March 7, as part of their week-long March to College. Senn also recognizes that moving the event to April 4 will allow 8th grade parents who have received offers from GoCPS (Mar. 29) to visit the school prior to the acceptance deadline (April 13). We look forward to seeing you soon!

¡Esperamos verte pronto!
