Dear Peirce parents and guardians,
By now, you are probably aware of the news of last Wednesday’s shootings at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County, Florida. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by this tragic incident.
I want you to know that safety is our top priority at Peirce. To help ensure the safest possible school environment, we have worked to implement the following safety measures, which are already in place at our school:
Strengthening our safety procedures is an ongoing process, and we continue to work with the CPS Office of Safety and Security to help ensure we are doing everything possible to support a safe and healthy school environment.
The recent school shooting in Florida has spurred conversations and calls for student-led days of action nationally. We respect and support our students’ desire to voice their opinions and participate in the wider conversations taking place. Students are part of the larger social fabric and it is critical that young people are informed and active participants in our democracy. However, we must ensure that students are safe and that there are minimal disruptions to classroom learning.
Our primary concern is that our students are safe, that’s why we are encouraging our teachers to create opportunities for these conversations to take place in the classroom, or through school-wide activities designed specifically to support our students’ desire for civic action.
In the coming weeks, there will be national days of action devoted to the issue of gun violence. While we respect our students’ right to share their views, we will consider these days to be regular attendance days. Students who are not in school, or who do not come back to class after walking out, will receive an unexcused absence.
We support student expression so if an event is planned, we will work with students to find positive opportunities for civic action, all while collaborating with our security staff to ensure things remain safe and orderly.
We thank you for your support and encourage you to speak with your children about civic participation.
