Greetings Peirce Families,

On Thursday, March 19th Mayor Lightfoot announced all schools will remain closed through Monday, April 20th returning on Tuesday April 21st. During this unprecedented time I hope that you are in good health and spirits. As a mother to a Peirce 8th grader, I recognize the challenges, uncertainties and worries that are present, I also look for the good that can come from this time - an opportunity to slow down, spend time with loved ones and support our community.

Meals continue to be available to students daily between 9 a.m and 1 p.m. Lunchroom staff will prep, bag, and provide meals at the main entrance of the school.

Sincerely,
Lori Zaimi
Principal

Traducción al español en la parte inferior

Greetings Peirce Families,

On Friday, March 13th, Governor Pritzker declared that all Illinois Schools will be closed beginning Tuesday March 17th, re-opening on Tuesday, March 31st. There is a chance that schools will remain closed longer than March 31st, the situation will be re-assessed throughout the school closure time period.

Please note that the school closures this time around is different than the strike camp - students and family members will not be allowed in the school during the school closure time period.

Learning Opportunities
Our teachers are working hard to create a learning plan that will engage students during the time that schools are closed. They are in the process of creating a combination of online and hard copy activities that will be available at the end of the day on Monday. Please reach out to your students classroom teacher with any questions regarding those plans.

Please know that many, if not all of the activities will not be graded, but are intended to support students with learning during the time that school is not in session.

Teachers will also be checking in on students/families via email or by phone during the school closure time period.

Meals Available to Students
For those who will need meals over the next two weeks: free food boxes will be available and will contain three days of breakfast and lunches for every student in the household. All families will be able to pick up meals at their nearest CPS school beginning Tuesday, March 17, between 9 a.m and 1 p.m. daily. Lunchroom staff will prep, bag, and provide meals outside of the school building.

The district has been sending, and will continue to send, regular COVID-19 updates to parents with more specific guidance. If you have not received these letters, I ask that you please update your emergency contact information with Sally in the main office by emailing her at essuarezdeduran@cps.edu so we can ensure you receive accurate and timely information.

Administrators onsite
During the school closures, at least one administrator will be on site daily to help with any issues that families may be experiencing. Please know that you can reach out to any one of us if you or someone you know is experiencing some type of need.

peirce family newsletter - covid-19

Greetings Peirce!

I know that there are many emotions running through our community as we experience so much uncertainty with COVID 19 and the impact it is having on our daily life. I hope that you are doing the best possible to take care of yourself and your families physical and mental health. Please reach out if you are in need of anything.

Earlier this evening CPS sent notification regarding updated guidelines/changes that will begin immediately through April 12th, possibly longer. At the end of this email you will find that communication.

In the meantime, please note the following which applies until April 12th, possibly longer:
  • Schools remain open - if that changes, families will be notified.
  • All out of state travel is cancelled - this applies to the April 1st-3rd Washington DC Trip. We are in touch with CPS/World-strides to see how we may be able to re-schedule or refund payment. More information to come.
  • After school programs will run as normal including fee based after school programs.
  • All Sports programming/Chess Competitions cancelled.
  • Assemblies/Field Trips cancelled.
  • Suspension on visitors/volunteers at Peirce including those who volunteer in the classroom..
  • No outside agencies can work in classrooms with students - I am looking into how this may affect our work with current arts partners.
  • Upcoming FOP events will be cancelled.
  • I am seeking further clarification about parent groups which meet in school facilities , including but not limited to (Local School Council, Parent Advisory Council, Bilingual Advisory Council, Peirce Service Organization, Friends of Peirce, Racial Equity Parent Group, etc).

Many parents have expressed concern about the lack of hand washing between recess and lunch. Please know that we have short term and long term solutions:

  • Short Term: hand sanitizer is available and there are pumps installed on the walls of the lunchroom.
  • Short Term: I am examining ways to revise our current school schedule to have students go to lunch first and then recess. I am hoping to have a plan in place by early next week.
  • Long Term: I have been in touch with Aramark and our school Engineer to see if it may be possible to install a handwashing station in the lunchroom.

Please reach out with any questions, I will update the Peirce community as I have more information.

Be Well,
Lori Zaimi

Saludos Peirce!

Cuidate,

peirce family newsletter - march 2020

Greetings Peirce!

I am excited to announce that Samuel Lee will be joining Peirce's Leadership team as an Assistant Principal on Monday, March 9th. Mr. Lee is filling the position that Dr. Riemer vacated at the end of November. Mr. Lee was offered the position after a thorough interview process which included a review of 90 resumes, 10 in person first round interviews and 4 second round interviews with a team of teachers, administrators and parents. You will find an introduction from Mr. Lee in this months newsletter.

Local School Council Elections
If you are a parent, community member, student, or teacher looking to get more involved with Peirce, consider running in the LSC election. The application window for the 2020 LSC elections is currently open. To apply, candidates must download and fill out the application forms and return them with two forms of identification to Peirce School by March 5, 2020 at 3:00 p.m.

Parents and community members have the option to file a Form 4-20 Candidate Statement, school staff candidates must file a Form 5-20 School Staff Candidate Information Form and high school student candidates must file a Form 6-20 Student Candidate Information Form.
Click here to access the forms. You can also come into the main office for an application packet.

Continuous Improvement Work Plan (CIWP)
Thank you to all of the parents who completed the CIWP Survey and who also attended the Local School Council Meeting on February 20th to provide input into our next two year plan. If you have not yet completed the survey, you can do so now by clicking here.

Each CPS school is responsible for creating a school improvement plan which spans across two school years, we are currently in the development phase for our next plan with the expectation that it will be ready for approval late Spring once budget is released.

Enrollment Update
Peirce's student enrollment continues to grow as more and more families from the community are sending their child(ren) to Peirce, their neighborhood school. As our enrollment increases we will need to reduce/eliminate the number of students who are accepted from the lottery. How might this affect you next school year?

  • Any student who resides within the attendance area is guaranteed admission to Peirce.
  • Our goal is to have class size no larger than 28 students in Kindergarten-8th grades.
  • Pre-Kindergarten: Enrollment into Pre-Kindergarten is not neighborhood based, families will still need to apply to Pre-School through the district enrollment process, applications for next school year have not yet been released.
  • Kindergarten: In years past we have accepted approximately 40-50 students from the lottery, CPS is recommending that we accept less than 20 next school year. This means that siblings of current students applying through the lottery will likely be accepted, and possibly a few more students who reside outside of the attendance area boundary.
  • 1st Grade: This years Kindergarten class has 29-32 students in each classroom, the goal for this same group of students next year is to have no more than 28 students per classroom. Enrollment will be monitored over the summer with the possibility of an additional classroom being opened in the fall for 1st grade.
  • 2nd-8th Grades: Depending on enrollment at each grade level, it is unlikely that we will be able to open the wait list for students who reside outside of our attendance boundary.

Confused? Feel free to email Sally Suarez in the main office with questions regarding enrollment. ESSuarezdeDuran@cps.edu

Sincerely,
Lori Zaimi
Principal
